Concept of thermodynamics

Thermodynamics :


It is a branch of science which deals with the energy transfer and its effect on the state or condition of the system.It is essentially based upon experimental results and observation of common experience because there is no mathematical proof for zeroth law of thermodynamics,first law of thermodynamics and second law of thermodynamics. 


Thermodynamics helps to study:

1.Energy and its tranformation.
2.Interaction of system and surrounding.
3.Relation between heat,work and its physical properties such as pressure,volume,temperature of the working substance employed to obtain energy conversation.
4.Feasibility of process and concept of equilibrium process.

Application of thermodynamics in field of energy technology:

1.Power producing devices Ex Ic engines,gas turbines,steam and nuclear power plants.
2.Power consuming devices Ex Fans,blowers,compressors refrigiration and AC plants. 

ZEROTH LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS : 

It deals with the thermal equilibrium ,relates the concept of equality of temperature and provides a means of measuring temperature.
Ex: When two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with third body then they both are in thermal equilibrium.


THERMAL EUILIBRIUM : 

A system is said to be in thermal euilibrium when its properties does not change by itself.
For ex : consider two bodies one is at high temperature and another one is at low temperature.Then,place both the bodies in contact you can observe now the heat from the high temperature body is going to tranfer to the low temperature body.After a few seconds you can observe both bodies are at same temperature I.e both are in thermal euilibrium condition.

FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS : 

It deals with the law of conservation of energy(Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but it changes from one form to another form) and introduces the concept of internal energy.
> Total energy of the isolated system inall its forms remains constant.
> No machine can produce energy without corresponding expenditure of energy.
> All other energy which goes into the system ,comes out in some other form of energy.
> It confirms that heat and work are mutually convertable.

LIMITATIONS OF FIRST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS:

1.First law does not specify the direction of heat and work.
2.First law does not show wheather a system undergo a change or not.It simply states that heat and work are mutually convertable during its process.
3.First law does not predict what portion of heat transfer is converted into useful work.
